Abstract: Networks were widely used to describe organizational and functional principles of living organisms across various scales. The topology of such biological complex networks often turned out to be "scale-free", with the power-law distribution of number of links per node, robust and modular with underlying self-similar structure. However, the topology of cytoarchitecture in living tissues has not yet received wide attention from the network perspective. Here we shall introduce the spatial complex network models of coupled clusters of beta cells in pancreatic islets. We will define the complexity of pancreatic islets of Langerhans using network representation and show how it depends on beta cell electrophysiology and cytoarchitecture of the tissue. Furthermore, we will present the simulations of the beta cells destruction in pancreas showing that the islet complexity behaves similar to the order parameter observed in phase transition phenomena, and discuss the results in the context of type I diabetes mellitus pathogenesis.

Seminarsko predavanje (v angleškem jeziku) bo v četrtek 6. novembra ob 15:15 uri v seminarski sobi CAMTP na Krekovi 2, pritličje desno. Vljudno vabljeni vsi zainteresirani, tudi študentje.
