Encoding and Decoding of Intra- and Intercellular $Ca^{2+}$ Signals

Abstract: In the seminar most prominent cellular mechanisms of signal transduction in biological cells are presented. We begin with simple two-component systems characteristic for prokaryotic cells. The mechanism is compared with $Ca^{2+}$-signalling in higher developed cells and with known human-developed telecommunication systems. In particular the TDMA and FDMA mechanisms are discussed. Since the cellular $Ca^{2+}$ signals can also be transmitted through gap-junctions to adjacent cells and can propagate in form of waves through the tissue, some most recent results on spatiotemporal $Ca^{2+}$ signals in intercellular signalling are also presented.
