New Advances in Soil Physics: Imaging the Soil Porous Architecture

Dr. Sacha J. Mooney

Division of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences,
University of Nottingham, UK

Abstract: The crucial problem of soil physics lays in the fact that some of the standard theories do not reflect the processes taking place at the pore scale in a sufficient way, and thus, cannot adequately be used for prediction. Examination of soil structure is vital for soil scientists. However, knowledge to date is fragmented primarily because methods of measurement are either destructive (to various extents) or based on observations solely in two dimensions. This represents a severe limitation for the spatio-temporal examination of three dimensional soil pore architecture. Using digital image processing in conjunction with imaging tools like X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), it is possible to reconstruct 3-D visualisations from density attenuation maps derived from the 2-D scans. CT has been used in soil sciences since 1980 although the technique is primarily still in its infancy mainly because of the cost of scanners and limited availability. The seminar will describe current experimentation at the University of Nottingham using X-ray CT and image analysis.

Seminarsko predavanje bo v torek, 23. maja 2006 ob 15:15 uri v seminarski sobi CAMTP, Krekova 2, pritlicje. Vljudno vabljeni vsi zainteresirani, tudi študenti.
