Modeling the human cardiovascular-respiratory control system: an optimal control application to orthostatic stress

Abstract: We describe a model of the human cardiovascular-respiratory control system. We will approach the modeling of the control system by viewing it as an optimal control problem. Many physiologists consider optimization as a basic influence in the evolution of biological systems (Kenner 1979). We adapt a model given in Timischl 1998 which has been previously used to study congestive heart failure $[1]$. Sudden change in position (supine to standing) results in change in physical stress (orthostatic stress) on the cardiovascular system. System response to orthostatic stress has been extensively studied $[2]$ but a number of issues are not well understood. The model is adapted using extra compartments and control loops to study the control of blood pressure and the avoidance of hypotension and those factors that influence cardiovascular adaptation to orthostatic stress. The goal is to provide insight into such conditions as orthostatic intolerance. Simulations are compared to data.
