Quantized Turbulence at mK Temperatures

Professor Dr. Peter V.E. McClintock
Department of Physics, Lancaster University, England

Abstract: The first experiments on the creation and decay of quantized turbulence in superfluid He-4 at mK temperatures will be discussed. The vortices are created with a electrostatically-driven vibrating grid, and detected by the use of negative ions travelling near the Landau critical velocity in isotopically pure liquid helium. Preliminary results indicate that the vortex decay rate apparently becomes temperature-independent below about 70 mK. It is believed that the corresponding decay mechanism may involve a Kolmogorov cascade, Kelvin waves and, ultimately, phonon creation.

Seminarsko predavanje bo v petek, 18. januarja 2002 ob 16:30 uri v seminarski sobi CAMTP, Krekova 2, pritlicje. Vljudno vabljeni vsi zainteresirani, tudi študenti.
